Looking to future, Sun trade Morrow to Toronto

Aneesh Morrow drives to the basket in Hartford against the Los Angeles Sparks in July.

The Connecticut Sun have eight games left in the Nutmeg State but the team is looking toward its future in Houston.

Connecticut, which lost their fourth straight game to Chicago on Thursday, traded second-year forward Aneesah Morrow to Toronto for a 2028 second round draft pick and the rights to Russian center Maria Kliundikova, who chose not to play for Toronto in the WNBA this year.

For a variety of reasons, the Sun (7-22) have been shorthanded for most of the season and this trade isn’t bringing any immediate help. They’ve played the last three games without Brittney Griner and Aaliyah Edwards, out with knee injuries.

Kliundikova, a Russian center who was drafted 11th overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2018, last played in the WNBA for the Minnesota Lynx in 2025, averaging 4.4 points and 3.0 rebounds in 34 games last year. The Tempo picked her in the expansion draft.

In the last two games – losses to Chicago and Washington – Morrow scored a season-high 21 points. She is averaging 11.6 points and 8.9 rebounds a game. She has nine starts in 20 appearances with the Sun this season.

Morrow was Connecticut’s No. 1 pick in the 2025 WNBA draft out of LSU. She averaged 7.7 points and 6.9 rebounds a game as a rookie.

Connecticut faces Dallas on Sunday in Arlington, Texas. It will begin at 7 p.m. and be broadcast live on ESPN. The Sun return home on Friday, Aug. 7 when they host the Phoenix Mercury and will retire the jersey of Alyssa Thomas.

The Sun has been sold and are moving to Houston for the 2027 WNBA season.
