Roundup: Softball shutout in tournament opener

Coginchaug pitcher Mari Handley limited the Canton High softball team (8-9, 8-8 NCCC) to just one hit and struck out 10 to eliminate the Warriors, 5-0 in the first round of the Class S tournament. Katherine Winsor’s bunt single in the fifth inning spoiled the no-hit bid for Hanley.

The Warriors won their regular season finale over Bolton, 9-3 as pitcher Christina Cardwell went the distance, striking out nine and allowing just one walk. Liz Mutch had an RBI double and RBI single while Cardwell added a double. Rose Minichello, Leigh Fitzgerald and Stephanie Gauthier each had singles for Canton.

BASEBALL: Canton’s baseball team won two of its final three games to finish at 5-13 on the year and 5-11 in the league. Colin Gurry scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning to lift Canton to a 4-3 win over Bolton. Two days later in the season finale, Nick Quattro had two home runs and Arias Banevicius had a homer to lead the Warriors to a 10-3 win over Bolton. Gehrig Deaver earned the win on the mound.
