Cardwell earns first varsity victory

CANTON, May 17 — The Canton High softball team (7-4, 7-3 NCCC) rebounded from a tough loss to Suffield with an 11-2 rout over Bolton. Freshman Christina Cardwell earned her first varsity victory on the mound, allowing just four hits. Mo Gauthier got a day off from her pitching duties and was a stellar 4-for-4 at the plate.

A day earlier, Suffield Angie Moskwa shutdown the Warriors in a 9-0 rout. Moskwa allowed just two hits and struck out 12 batters as Canton was blanked for the second time this season. Suffield’s Alyssa Wagner led the Wildcats (13-3, 11-1 NCCC) with a single, double, triple and one RBI.

The second game with defending Class LL champion Fitch-Groton that was suspended in the first inning earlier this month will be completed on Saturday (May 22) at noon at the high school. Canton erased a three-run deficit to take a 4-3 lead before the game was postponed. It will be replayed in its entirety.

Canton is looking to finish strong in its last five league contests to earn a spot in the NCCC softball tournament on Friday, May 28. The top four teams in the league earn invitations.
