No. 1 Staples extends win streak to 17; Granby to face Westbrook in top 10 battle

For the fourth consecutive week, Staples is the unanimous No. 1 team in the state field hockey coaches poll. The defending Class L champion Wreckers (10-0) have won 17 straight games dating back to last season.

Wilton (10-0) and Cheshire (8-0) swapped spots with Wilton moving up to No. 2, one point ahead of the Rams in third spot. No. 4 Immaculate-Danbury (11-0) continues to lead the state in victories.

Staples has a showdown scheduled with No. 2 Wilton on Friday at home in Westport at 4:30 p.m.

No. 5 Granby (9-0) remained undefeated and beat No. 11 Pomperaug on Saturday, 2-1. The Bears gave up their first goals of the season to Suffield earlier in the week and Pomperaug on Saturday. Granby has outscored opponents 24-2 in nine games this year.

Granby has two challenging games this week when they host No. 9 Westbrook (7-0-1) on Wednesday in Granby at 4:30 p.m. The Bears host Longmeadow, Mass., on Friday at 4 p.m.

At No. 8, Guilford (8-1-1) was one of two teams to join the top ten this week. Stonington (9-0-1) also slipped in at No. 10, tying Norwalk.
