Canton’s Berning leads heptathlon; Avon’s Murray is third in decathlon

Day 1 of he CIAC decathlon and heptathlon was held Monday in New Britain.

After day 1 of the CIAC decathlon and heptathlon at Willow Brook Park in New Britain, two local athletes are in championship contention.

Canton sophomore Kayla Berning leads the heptathlon by 111 points after four events over Kolbe’s Carmen Whitten with 2,628 points. Avon’s Logan Murray is third in the decathlon after five events with 3,141 points.

Berning was second in the 100 hurdles and third in the high jump with a leap of 5-2.25 feet. She also finished ninth in the 200 meters (27.01) and eighth in the shot (27-3.75).

Canton teammate Lucy O’Connor took second in the high jump and fifth in the shot. O’Connor is tenth overall with 2,160 points. The event concludes on Tuesday in New Britain.

In the decathlon, Jacob Smith of Fitch leads with 3,402 points with Prince Tech’s Damarion Wilson second with 3,155 points and Murray in third place with 3,141 points.

Murray won the 400 meters with a time of 50.35 seconds and was third in the 100 meters with a time of 11.42 seconds. He was seventh in the high jump (5-8), 11th in the shot (33-7.25) and 14th in the long jump (11.42 meters).

Both events resume on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

In other events, Canton’s Ally Chickos (36.30 meters) was fifth in the hammer throw while Canton’s Warren Pelletier was sixth in the boys hammer throw (54.46m).
