Warriors rally to remain undefeated

WINDSOR LOCKS, Dec. 23 – The Canton High girls basketball had to withstand a spirited effort from Windsor Locks to remain undefeated. The Warriors battled back from first half deficits of 10-2 and 14-6 to earn a 44-33 decision Tuesday night and improve to 4-0 on the season. 

Maggie Treacy led the Warriors with 16 points including a big three-point shot near the end of the first half to cut the Raiders halftime lead to just one point, 15-14. Gabby Rose had 11 points while Jacquie Grabowski added 10 points, a team-high 15 rebounds and seven steals. 

Canton played well in the second half limiting the Raiders to just 18 points. Dominique Boyd, who had nine points in the first half, had just two points in the final two quarters. 

“We made some key stops and made free throws down the stretch,” Canton coach Brian Medieros said. “It was a great team win. It’s wasn’t pretty but we found a way to get the W. The kids never stopped playing hard and believing in each other.” 

Not only did Treacy scored 16 points but she had 13 steals. Emily Briggs scored seven points but she pulled down 12 rebounds and had eight steals. Rose had seven rebounds as well. 

Canton plays Granby (2-2) at 5 p.m. on Saturday night at the high school in a boys and girls doubleheader. The game is the opening round contest in the East Lyme Holiday Classic. The second game will be Monday in East Lyme against either East Lyme (1-3) or St. Bernard-Montville (2-2). 

In the second game at Canton High, the Warriors boys team (2-1) will host Lewis Mills (2-1) in a non-league contest that begins at 7 p.m.
