Avon’s Jamie Dlugolecki, right, was one of several Avon wrestlers to win twice at the Class M tournament in Milford. The Falcons finished seventh. Dlugolecki wrestles Farmington’s Zack Marin in January.
MILFORD – The Avon High wrestling team got off to a good start at the Class M championships. They led the tournament after two rounds but the Falcons couldn’t sustain their success and finished tied for seventh.
The Falcons had four wrestlers medal and qualify for next weekend’s CIAC State Open in New Haven and they finished in the top 10 for the fourth time in the last five years.
But Avon (20-2, 9-0 NCCC) had hoped they could make a run in the tournament that didn’t feature a dominant squad this season.
Ledyard had just one individual champion but the Colonels had two wrestlers finish third, two take fourth place, one finish fifth and three take sixth place. The Colonels won the Class M title for the fourth consecutive year with a 10½ point win over Foran, 164½ to 154 with ECC rival Waterford taking third with 140 points.
New London (127½) , New Fairfield (126) and Berlin (125) finished ahead of the Falcons, who shared seventh place with Ellis Tech of Danielson. Each team had 118 points.
Senior Gino Bonalumi led Avon by taking second at 285 pounds, dropping a 1-0 decision to Foran’s Luke Edmondson thanks to a second period escape. Edmundson won his second straight state title by riding out the third period and denying Bonalumi an escape or reversal.
Bonalumi (35-3) earned a spot in the final with a 1-0 win over New Fairfield’s Austin Blum thanks to a second period escape. Bonalumi also had two pins in the tournament.
Junior Jack St. Onge (32-10) finished fourth at 145 pounds. St. Onge won his first two matches before losing in the semifinals to Branford’s Nicholas Temple, 6-3. St. Onge beat Ellis Tech’s Cyrus Smith, 6-2 before lost to Ledyard’s Joshua Rahal, 16-2 in the consolation final.
Anthony Tripodi (106) finished fifth with an 8-0 win over Branford’s Bijays Jaisi while teammate Johnny Oh (120) finished sixth, going 3-3 in the tournament.
Avon’s Peter Oh (113), Jamie Dlugolecki (152) and Marvyn Esobar (195) each went 2-2 in the tournament while Ryan Farrell (128), Sam Fusaro (138), Mike Lancaster (160), Blake Edwards (170), Justin Nastri (182) and Kurt Ollestard (220) each picked up an individual victory.
