When called, Avon’s Smith will be ready to contribute for Blackhawks

Slowed by injuries this year, Avon right wing Ben Smith is ready to play in the Stanley Cup playoffs if and when the Chicago Blackhawks call upon him. “He’s somebody we won’t be afraid to use,” Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville said of forward Ben Smith to the Rockford Register Star. “At any point.”

The Blackhawks are the top seed in the NHL’s Western Conference and are facing the Minnesota Wild in the first round. Smith didn’t dress for game 2 Friday against Minnesota.

Smith scored a goal in his first NHL action of the season against St. Louis last Saturday night after spending the season with the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL. Smith scored a career high 27 goals with 20 assists this season with Rockford with eight goals in the final four games.  Read more
