AVON, April 25 – Stephen Carrier hit two doubles and drove in three runs and three Avon High pitchers limited East Granby to just four hits and struck out nine Crusader batters as Avon beat East Granby, 5-2 at Buckingham Field on a beautiful but chilly Saturday afternoon.
The visiting Crusaders (3-3, 3-2 NCCC) took a 1-0 lead immediately but Avon didn’t wait to respond with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Justin Olson doubled and Sean DelGallo was hit by a pitch. Both scored on Carrier’s two-RBI double. Carrier scored on Zarwanski’s RBI double for a 3-1 lead.
East Granby cut the lead to one in the fourth inning but Avon extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. DelGallo reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on Carrier’s RBI double. Carrier scored on a RBI single from Zarwanski.
On the mound, Avon’s Ian McDonald picked up the win, pitching 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and allowing just three hits. Olson closed out the game with three strikeouts in the top of the seventh inning.
For the second time this season, Avon has four games scheduled next week. The Falcons play at Suffield on Monday before coming home to host Canton at Buckingham on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. On Thursday, Avon travels to Colt Park in Hartford to face SMSA and closes out the week with a 3 p.m. game on Saturday at Arute Fields in Stafford against the Bulldogs
