COVENTRY, April 24 – On a cold, windy, raw afternoon, the Coventry High baseball team took advantage of its opportunities to earn a 5-2 win over Avon Friday.

The Patriots (5-1, 4-1 NCCC) had just six hits but three were for doubles as the Patriots grabbed a 5-0 lead after two innings. Bruce Smith’s RBI double in the first inning put the Patriots up by a run. In the second inning, Coventry extended its lead thanks to RBI doubles from Luke Lawrence and Nicholas Bonee Gionfriddo and a RBI single from Jacob Jeroszko.

Avon (3-2, 2-2 NCCC) was able to punch across two runs in the top of the seventh but it was too late. Outfielder Stephen Carrier and catcher Jeremy Zarwanski each had a RBI single with two outs in the seventh. Carrier finished the day with two singles for the Falcons.

Coventry hurler Malachai Emond scattered five hits and struck out five to earn the win. Avon’s Will Boone struck out five but took the loss. Avon gets right back on the diamond on Saturday when they host East Granby (3-2, 3-1 NCCC) at Buckingham Field at 3 p.m.
