GRANBY, April 22 – Grace Giancola scored with four seconds left in regulation to lift the Canton High girls lacrosse team to a thrilling 12-11 win over Granby Wednesday afternoon on the road. Giancola, who has a team-leading 31 goals, scored four goals in the victory that left Canton in first place in the NCCC.
Canton improves to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the league – the best start in the program’s six-year history. Not only did Canton beat Granby for the first time but the Warriors are four games over .500 for the first time ever. Avon (3-1, 3-1 NCCC) is a half game behind Canton.
Goalie Amanda Gottlieb did her part making 11 saves to hold off the Bears. Emma Charron had three goals while Oliva Sullivan and Devon Daubert chipped in with two goals each. Carly Atkinson had one score.
Granby (3-2, 3-2 NCCC) was led by Olivia Johnson with five goals and Kathy Kleis with three goals. Krista Iwanicki had two while goalie Hala Van Nostrand made nine stops in net. It was the second straight one-goal loss for the Bears, who lost to Avon last week, 12-11 in overtime.
Canton travels to Fairfield on Friday for a 5 p.m. against the Mustangs of Fairfield Warde (4-1) at Tetreau/Davis Field before facing Avon on Monday afternoon in Avon. The Warriors have won five straight after dropping a two-goal decision to Avon on opening day.
