CANTON – There are six former Canton High softball players on the Canton entry in the Connecticut Women’s Softball League that is looking to win the league title for the fifth straight season.
Canton went 12-4-1 in the league a year ago and swept the season-ending tournament to claim the championship. Christina Cardwell, Amber Batan, Liz Mutch, Brittany King and Nicole Batan are returning and senior shortstop Katie Walker is joining the team now that the Canton High team has been eliminated from the state tournament.
Most of the team from last year is returning as well including pitcher Katie Donovan, a former Southern Connecticut State and Gilbert School player who now lives in East Hartland; Amy Mantha from Agawam, Mass.; Breann Joyce, originally from Trumbull, now lives in Springfield; Danielle Leone from Manchester; Loren Rozanski from Bristol and Amy Hartman from Ellington. The team is coached by Charley Batan.
The Connecticut Women’s Softball League is an eight-team league primarily in northern Connecticut. Two new teams joined the league this season from Suffield and Windsor. The Connecticut Tides, who play at Coginchaug Regional in Durham, had the best regular season record a year ago (11-3) before losing in the first round of the league tournament to Ellington (1-13). Other teams include Rocky Hill (8-5-1), Bristol (6-7-1) and West Hartford (5-8-1).
