LITCHFIELD, May 11 – Pitcher James Mattson scattered four hits and struck out eight to lead the Canton High baseball team to their third victory in the last four games with a 6-3 non-league win over Litchfield Thursday at Community Field.
Canton (8-7, 6-6 NCCC) won for the third time in four games – played on four straight days. Mattson, now 3-1, won for the second time this week. He picked up the win on Tuesday in a 10-3 victory over University/Classical.
Ryan Enns was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI for Canton while Jack Rose was 2-for-3. Catcher Sam Beadle hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season with a two-run blast in the third inning to give Canton the lead for good, 3-2.
Litchfield (4-11) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Canton trimmed one run off the lead in the second inning thanks to an error, a hit batter, a single from Rose and a sacrifice fly from Michael Sullivan. Rose’s home run in the third gave Canton the lead.
In the fifth, Canton extended their lead to 4-2 on a sacrifice fly from Ethan Burke that scored Enns. In the sixth inning, Enns’ two-run double gave the Warriors a 6-2 advantage.
For Litchfield, catcher Colby Bunnell had a two-run double in the first inning. Connor Ryle had a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Canton takes some time off before returning to the diamond on Monday with a game at Bolton.

Avon 12, Rockville 0
VERNON, May 11 – Justin Olson and Jeremy Zarwanski were each 2-for-4 with a home run and a double to lead the Avon High baseball team to their seventh win in the last eight games with a 12-0 Central Connecticut Conference shutout over Rockville on Thursday.
On Senior Day, a pair of seniors had an outstanding afternoon. Olson had a line drive home run in the sixth inning while Zarwanski had a two-run home run to center field in the fourth inning. It was his second homer of the year. Zarwanski had four RBI in the game.
For Avon, Chris Jacobs was 2-for-4, Adam Theriault was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI and Kyle Zarwanski had a double. The host Rams (11-4), who had just three hits all day, had won 10 of their last 11 games.
On the mound, Olson (3-1) picked up the victory, pitching for 4 1/3 innings, allowing two hits, one walk and striking out six. Ray Powell had three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Nine Litchfield batters struck out in the contest.
Avon returns to action on Monday night when they travel to Simsbury for a 7 p.m. contest at Memorial Field.
