Martin wins dual meet race; Avon High boys and girls split opener

SIMSBURY, September 10 – Sophomore Jack Martin set a new course record to help the Avon High boys cross country team earn a victory on Tuesday at Stratton Brook State Park in Simsbury.

Martin won the 3.1 mile race with a time of 16:55 to lead Avon. Simsbury swept the Falcons, 22-25 and beat Northwest Catholic, 17-46. Avon beat Northwest Catholic, 19-44, to earn a split.

The Falcons had three runners in the top 10 – Martin, Tyler Hinrichs (6) and Jevonte Eaves (9). Dan Carvalho (11), Luke Hester (12) and Hari Patchgolla (14) also ran well for Avon (1-1, 1-1 CCC West Patriot).

In the girls race, Avon came out with a split, beating Northwest Catholic, 15-49 and dropping a 15-46 decision to Simsbury. Amanda Derway of Simsbury won the race with a winning time of 21:02.

Maren Ek led the Falcons finishing sixth while Logan Jacobs with seventh. Gabrielle Richmond (10), Sarah Lancaster (11) and Haley Luby (16) also ran well for the Falcons.

Avon returns to action on Saturday running at the Stratton Brook Invitational on the same course in Simsbury.
