Rally falls short as Yard Goats drop season finale to Binghamton

Hartford’s Bret Boswell hit his 15th home run of the season in Monday night’s season finale in Binghamton.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y., September 2 – The 2019 Eastern League baseball season is over for the Hartford Yard Goats after a 4-3 loss to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.

Hartford (73-66) trailed by three runs in the seventh inning, 4-1, and cut the lead to one but that is as close as the Yard Goats would get.

Hartford’s Bret Boswell hit his 15th home run of the season for the Yard Goats, who fell one win shy of the team record for most wins in a season. Hartford won 74 games in 2016, when the Yard Goats spent the entire season on the road waiting for Dunkin’ Donuts Park to be completed.

Hartford took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Alan Trejo scored on a wild pitch from Binghamton starter and knuckleballer Mickey Jannis.  The Rumble Ponies tied the game in the third inning as Andres Jimenez led off the inning with a solo home run off Hartford starter Brandon Gold (12-6), who was unable to extend his single season club record for victories.

The Rumble Ponies scored three runs on five hits in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead.  Luis Carpio began the rally with a leadoff homer over the left field fence to give Binghamton a 2-1 lead.  After Mike Paez singled, Edgardo Fermin scored him on a double into the left field corner to make it a 3-1 game.  Quinn Brodey capped the three-run inning with a double to left scoring Fermin and putting the Ponies ahead 4-1.

The Yard Goats scored a run in the seventh inning to make it a 4-2 game.  Trejo cracked a leadoff double and scored on a single by Scott Burcham.  Boswell smashed a solo home run over the right field fence in the eighth inning to make it 4-3.

Carlos Herrera opened the ninth with a leadoff double but the Yard Goats could not score him.  Marcel Renteria struck out the next two batters and got a flyout to end the game.

The Yard Goats won just one of four games in Binghamton to close out the season. On Sunday, outfielder Mylz Jones hit a two-out solo home run in the eighth inning to lift the Yard Goats to a 3-2 victory.

Pitcher Ashton Goudeau pitched six innings and gave up a pair of unearned runs. Reliever Scott Griggs recorded the final four outs for his 16th save of the year. Trejo also had a home run for the Goats.
