
Senior hitter Emily Dempsey converted on 19 of 24 opportunities to make a kill in Friday night’s win over Glastonbury that lifted Avon to the CCC West Patriot title.
GLASTONBURY, Oct. 25 – It’s been 14 years since the Avon High girls volleyball team won a championship. The Falcons grabbed their first pennant since 2005 with a 3-0 win over Glastonbury on Friday night to win the CCC West Patriot Division championship.
No. 8 Avon swept Glastonbury, 25-23, 25-10, 25-10 to improve to 15-1 on the year and 8-0 in the CCC West Patriot. It’s Avon’s first title since grabbing the North Central Connecticut Conference championship in 2005.
Emily Dempsey was on fire with a team-high 19 kills in 24 attempts. Abby St. Onge and Eliza Jones had five kills each to pace Avon’s 35-kill attack. St. Onge had a team-leading 27 assists and blocked three shots. Jones also had three kills.
Baylee Braun had 13 digs for the Falcons while Kelli Raines had 10 digs.
Avon closes out the regular season with two matches against Farmington Valley rivals. The Falcons host Simsbury on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m. before finishing the regular season at Farmington on Friday, November 1 at 6 p.m.
Avon is among 16 teams that have qualified for the Central Connecticut Conference tournament. The first round of the CCC Tournament will be Monday, Nov. 4 with the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The semifinals will be Thursday, Nov. 7 in Avon. The CCC Tournament final will be either Friday, Nov. 8 or Saturday, Nov. 9, in Avon.
The CIAC Class L tournament begins Monday, Nov. 11.
