MANCHESTER, Oct. 16 – Both Avon High cross country teams earned top 10 finishes at the 2019 Central Connecticut Conference championship meet at Wickham Park on Wednesday.
Rhiannon Richmond finished eleventh overall with a time of 19:57.1 to lead the Falcons girls team to a sixth place finish in the CCC. Hall easily won the girls meet with three runners in the top 10 and five runners among the top 17 finishers. The Warriors beat Simsbury, 49-88.
Avon finished sixth in the CCC for the third time in the last four seasons. Gabrielle Richmond (33, 21:12), Maureen Ek (40, 21:24), Sarah Lancasters (50, 21:53) and Logan Jacobs (58, 22:24) rounded out the top five scoring for the Falcons. There are 32 teams in the CCC and 26 fielded a full girls teams.
The Avon High boys cross country team finished tenth – their best finish since taking eighth in 2016. Tyler Hinrichs led Avon by finishing 33rd in the field of more than 200 runners.
Daniel Carvalho (52, 17:54), Anish Rajamanickham (74, 18:23), Lucas Hester (77, 18:24) and David Parry (80, 18:30) were among the top five varsity runners for the Falcons. Avon’s Jack Martin did start the race and was running with the race leaders but dropped out with a muscle cramp. Head coach Courtney Fusco said he should be fine for the upcoming CIAC state championship meet.
In the boys championship race, Tolland had three runners in the top 10 and five in the top 15 to beat Conard, 44-60 to win the CCC championship. Gavin and Callum Sherry finished first and fourth, respectively, but the next Conard runner finished 14th. Thirty of the CCC’s 32 teams fielded full teams.
Rhiannon Richmond, Gabrielle Richmond, Marenn Ek, Sarah Lancaster earned All-CCC West honors along with Tyler Hinrichs, and Dan Carvalho.
Avon returns to action on Saturday, October 26 when the Falcons participate in the CIAC Class MM championship meet back here at Wickham Park. The girls run at 1 p.m. with the boys racing at 1:35 p.m.
