NEW BRITAIN, June 15, 2022 – Lewis Mills junior Michael Johnson had top 10 finishes in seven of 10 events to finish second in the CIAC decathlon on Wednesday at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.
Johnson finished second with 5,941 points in the decathlon with Stonington junior Joshua Mooney taking first with 6,331 points.
Canton’s Nate Cournean was 14th with 4,923 points with Simsbury’s Cole Musser (13, 4,932) and Farmington’s Thomas Yonkers (19, 4,581) also earning top 20 finishes.
In the girls hepathlon, Lewis Mills’ Ginny Mullen (13, 3,262) and Gabriella Zeller (17, 3,137) also earned top 20 finishes.
In the girls hammer throw, Canton senior Tommie Barker was eighth with teammate Lauren Marze in ninth place.
Johnson won the 400 meters in the decathlon with a time of 50.02 seconds and was second in the 100 meters (11.27) and 110 hurdles (14.27). He was third in the long jump (19-11¾) , sixth in the discus and ninth in the javelin and shot put.
Cournean was third in the 110 hurdles with a time 15.97 and was eighth in the long jump (19-5¼). Musser was fifth in the high jump (5-10) and ninth in the discus and 110 hurdles while Yonkers was sixth (10-11¾) in the pole vault and eighth in the 1,500 meters.
Mullen’s best event was the 800 meters where she finished tenth in 2:36.31. Zeller finished second in the 800 meters in 2:26.24 and was fourth in the long jump (16-1½).
On their second throw of the day, Barker threw the hammer 96-0 feet to make the finals in the girls hammer event. Marze finished one spot shy of the final in ninth place with her best throw of 90-7 feet.
