Avon booters prevail on Senior Night; Avon spikers fall while Mills sweeps

AVON, October 21, 2022 – Braden Gilbey scored two goals while Lucas Monteiro had a goal and an assist to lead the Avon High boys soccer team to a 5-1 win over Southington in CCC West action Friday night on the turf field.

Roel Johnson and Trevor Moretti also scored for the Falcons (6-4-3) on Senior Night under the lights. Eli Disenhof made two saves in net to earn the victory.

It was the first varsity goals for Moretti, who also had an assist, and Johnson.

AVON, Oct. 21, 2022 – The Falcons gave all they had and pushed Newington to a fifth game but the visiting Nor’easters came away with a 3-2 victory on Friday night.

The Falcons (5-11) had a 2-1 lead after winning 25-22 in game three but the Nor’easters survived in game four with a 25-23 decision to force a decisive game five. Newington (13-5) won the match, 20-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10.

Jocee Powers had 30 digs for the Falcons while Katelyn Wankier had 12 kills and six blocks. Olivia Evanko had 21 assists, 13 digs and five serving aces. Hollis Ryan added seven kills for Avon.

Lewis Mills 3, Bloomfield 0
BURLINGTON, Oct. 21, 2022 – Peyton DesJardin and Besty Buchanan each had 10 serving aces to lead the Spartans to a 25-10, 25-2, 25-10 win over Bloomfield on Friday.

DesJardin had 11 digs and Buchanan had 18 assists for Mills (9-8) with Alyssa Behrendt chipping in with six aces and six kills.

Chloe Smiley had eight digs and one kill for Bloomfield (1-16) while Payton Sirdine had four digs, one kill and one serving ace.

Simsbury 3, East Hartford 0
SIMSBURY, Oct. 21, 2022 – No. 4 Simsbury improved to 16-2 on the season with a 3-0 sweep over East Hartford in CCC action. The Trojans play their final regular season game on Monday at Glastonbury.
