Roundup: Granby/Canton rallies to beat Ellington; Avon falls

Granby/Canton scored 21 unanswered points to beat Ellington, 21-7 on Friday night.

GRANBY, Oct. 28, 2022 – The Granby/Canton football team picked up a big victory in their quest to earn a CIAC playoff berth for the third consecutive season.

The Bears scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to beat Ellington, 21-7 in a Pequot Conference Uncas Division contest on Friday night.

“The kids played their hearts out and never gave up,” Granby/Canton coach Erik Shortell said. “They played super physical and got the job done.”

Granby quarterback Will Migliaccio threw a pair of touchdown passes in the third quarter to Brandon Powell (31 yards) and Will Attianese (25 yards) as the Bears (5-2, 5-1 Pequot Uncas) took a 14-7 lead.

Connor Richardson’s 50-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter gave Granby/Canton a two-score cushion. Richardson set a co-op record with the return, eclipsing the previous record of 43 yards set by Sam Attianese in 2019.

“I was proud of how the boys made the adjustments we put in (at halftime) and played a great second half, putting up 21 (points) and shutting them out,” Shortell said.

Migliaccio completed 13-of-23 passes for 162 yards and two TDs. Luke Maher the Bears on the ground with 56 yards rushing on 12 carries.

With the win, Granby/Canton moved up to No. 5 in the CIAC’s Class SS football rankings with the top eight teams earning a spot in the tournament.

The Bears return to action on Friday when they host Morgan School at 6:30 p.m. in Granby.

Berlin 35, Avon 8
BERLIN, Oct. 28, 2022 – Josh Clement rushed for a career-high four touchdowns and 100 yards to lead undefeated Berlin to a 35-8 win over Avon at Sage Park on Friday night in a CCC Tier 3 contest. Quarterback Lorenzo Miele completed 6-of-13 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown for the Redcoats (7-0, 4-0 CCC Tier 3).

Avon (3-4, 1-3 Tier 3) was led by Connor Lavore, who ran for a game-high 135 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. The Falcons scored on a 91-yard march that ate up more than nine minutes in the third quarter.

The Falcons return to action on Friday night when they host Plainville beginning at 6 p.m.

MERIDEN, Oct. 30, 2022 – Amari Robinson ran for a pair of touchdowns while quarterback Avery Robinson threw three TD passes as Platt High rolled to a 42-7 win over Farmington on Friday night in Central Connecticut Conference Tier III action at Falcon Field. Platt improves to 5-2 and 5-1 in Tier III on the year.

Jahkai Veal caught a six-yard touchdown pass from QB Kevin Ives for the River Hawks (2-5, 1-3 Tier III).

Rocky Hill 42, Lewis Mills 7
ROCKY HILL, Oct. 28, 2022 – Rocky Hill’s Frankie Guerrera had a game for the record books on Friday night against Lewis Mills at McVicar Field.

Guerrera scored a school-record 42 points and six touchdowns to lead the Terriers to a 42-7 win over Lewis Mills in CCC Tier 4 action. Guerrera ran for a career-high 169 and five TDs on 15 carries while pulling five receptions for 94 yards and another touchdown.

Along with touchdowns, Guerrera also kicked six extra points, another career-high. The Terriers improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in Tier 4.

Lewis Mills (1-6, 0-4 Tier 4) was led by Jack Stanislaw, who had a 77-yard kickoff return. The Spartans return to action on Saturdaym Nov. 5, when they host E.O. Smith at noon in Burlington.
