NEWINGTON, Dec. 21, 2022 – Canton’s Evan Howard scored with 4:50 left in the first period and teammate Jeremy Wagner made 14 saves in net as the Newington co-op hockey team improved to 3-0 with a 1-0 win over Enfield/East Granby/Stafford Wednesday night in CCC South action.
Tommy Terhune made 29 stops in net for the visiting Eagles (2-1). It was the second shutout of the season for Wagner.
Both teams traded opportunities back and forth throughout the course of the game.
Howard gave the Nor’easters the early advantage finishing off a a nice passing play between Newington’s Evan Oliver and Canton sophomore Cole Brandon at 4:50 of the first period. Howard’s spinning shot eluded Terhune and seemed to forecast more offensive fireworks. Howard has scored five goals in the last two games.
But Terhune then made 26 consecutive saves to give his teammates a chance to comeback. Terhune was particularly busy in the third period making several diving, desperation saves to limit the Newington squad to the single goal.
Down at the other end Wagner wasn’t quite as busy but had to make several impressive stops on a breakaway and on several odd-man rushes to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.
Wagner was also aided by some sharp penalty killing from Mason Buckley, Nate Thomas, Harrison Ranger and Josh Grimm in particular as the Nor”easters blunted every attempt by the Eagles to tie up the score.
Newington is a five-team co-op program with players from Canton, Cromwell, Berlin and Manchester. The Nor’easters return to action on Friday night when they visit the Bolton Ice Palace to visit the Northeast co-op beginning at 8 p.m.
