Avon, Simsbury prevail in Class L state tournament openers

Simsbury’s Amanda Gallagher (32) had a game-high 33 points as No. 5 Simsbury rolled to an easy win over Rockville in the first round of the Class L tournament on Monday.

AVON, Feb. 27, 2023 – The No. 11 Avon High girls basketball team won their first CIAC tournament game since 2015 with a 44-34 victory over Naugatuck in the first round of the Class L tournament on Monday afternoon.

Sophie Mango had a game-high 16 points to lead the Falcons with Adi Standish scoring 13 points and Lila Aguilar adding eight, including a pair of three-point shots.

The Falcons (15-7) advance to Thursday’s second round where they will challenge No. 6 St. Joseph (17-4) in Trumbull beginning at 6:30 p.m.

SIMSBURY, Feb. 27, 2023 – Amanda Gallagher scored a game-high 33 points and hit six shots from three-point ranges as No. 5 Simsbury rolled to an easy 75-21 win over No. 28 Rockville in Class L. Olivia Jarvis added 26 points for the CCC champion Trojans (21-4).

Simsbury’s All-CCC center Faye Kaplinski missed the game because she was feeling ill. She is expected to be back on Thursday when Simsbury hosts No. 12 Windsor in a second round game beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Canton game postponed
CANTON, Feb. 27, 2023 – Canton High’s opening round contest in Class M at Woodland Regional was postponed until Wednesday, March 1 due to the forecast for snow on Tuesday. The No. 22 Warriors (9-12) will face No. 11 Woodland (13-7) at 6:30 p.m.
