State champion Falcons start off tennis season with a win

Ryan Hovorka won in straight sets Tuesday as defending state champion Avon opened their season with a 5-2 win over Staples in Westport.

WESTPORT, April 4, 2023 – Liam Hovorka, Ryan Hovorka, Will Mathias and Vishant Kanipilli each won in singles to lead the two-time defending state champion Avon High boys tennis team to a 5-2 win over Staples in the first match of the season for the Falcons. Both Staples victories came in doubles with third set tiebreakers.

Avon won their 42nd consecutive dual meet. They won the final bout of the 2019 season with the 2020 season being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the Falcons went 19-0 and a year ago, they finished 21-0.
