A look at Boston’s historic Matthews Arena

Sports Illustrated produced a video about Boston’s historic Matthews Arena as part of their series called Stadium Wonders.

Matthews Arena has seen it all — fires, rebuilds, NHL legends, college hockey classics, and even the Boston Celtics.

In this episode of Stadium Wonders, Sports Illustrated’s Dan Gartland travels to Boston to explore the incredible story of Matthews Arena, the oldest multi-purpose athletic building still in use in the world and the historic home of Northeastern University hockey. From its opening in 1910 to hosting some of the biggest names in Boston sports, Matthews has survived more than a century of change while staying at the heart of its community.

Dan sits down with Northeastern Athletic Director Jim Madigan to unpack what makes this arena so special — the atmosphere on game night, the legends who’ve passed through, and why this building still matters in a city full of iconic venues. If you love sports history, old barns, and the stories behind the stadiums we cheer in, this is a must-watch.
