Houle wins first New England championship at Northfield

Collinsville’s Colby Houle, a junior at Northfield Mt. Hermon in Gill, Massachusetts, won his first New England Prep School championship Saturday at Greens Farms Academy in Westport.

Houle beat Andrew McCarthy of New York Military Academy in the finals at 150 pounds by a score of 10-5 to complete a 5-0 day with three pins.

In his championship match, Houle took a 3-1 lead on McCarthy after one period thanks to a takedown. McCarthy cut the lead to 3-2 in the second period only to see Houle get a takedown with 52 seconds remaining to extend his lead to 6-2.

McCarthy got a late escape in the second period and picked up two points when Houle was penalized for stalling in the third period to cut the lead to 7-5. But Houle secured the championship with another takedown.

Houle beat Kimoni Giles of New England champion Greens Farms Academy in the semifinals, 10-1 thanks to three takedowns.

In his first three bouts of the tournament, Houle, now 19-3, advanced with pins in 54 seconds, 1:06 and 1:13.

A week earlier, Houle won the Class A championship in Bath, Maine with three pins in 52, 47 and 59 seconds.

Houle helped Northfield Mt. Hermon finish second in New England for the third straight year. Northfield was second behind Greens Farms Academy, who has won the last four New England Prep School championships.

Houle grew up in Canton and attended Canton schools before heading to Northfield Mt. Hermon for his high school career.

Houle and Northfield Mt. Hermon will be competing in the Prep School national championships this weekend in Stabler Arena on the campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.

He is a two-time All-American with Northfield. Houle finished fourth at 144 pounds with a 33-7 record a year ago and was sixth at 132 pounds in 2024 as a freshman.
