Sun give up franchise-record 123 points in big loss to Indiana

The Indiana Fever are flying into Saturday’s WNBA All-Star break with big smiles on their faces.

The Fever throttled the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday night, setting a franchise record for most points in a single game in a 123-88 rout with all three Fever All-Star participants playing at a high level. Caitlyn Clark had a game-high 27 points and 11 assists, Kelsey Mitchell added 23 points and Aliyah Boston scored 22.

Indiana (17-10) closed out the first half of the season with a three-game winning streak.

The Sun (7-20) were missing starters Brittney Griner (left knee) and Aaliyah Edwards (right knee). Connecticut gave up a franchise record for most points in a single game (123), breaking the record of 110 in an overtime loss to Minnesota in 2010 and the most points in a single half (70), breaking the record of 65 scored by Washington in 2018.

Diamond Miller led the Sun with 15 points while Saniya Rivers added 13.

The Sun, who have lost two straight, have given up more than 100 points six times this season. It was the third-highest scoring game in league history in regulation.

Indiana sank 11 three-point shots including five from Clark and three from Mitchell.

The Fever used a 24-4 run in the second quarter to turn a three-point game into a runaway. Indiana led 27-24 with 1:46 left in the first quarter. With 5:12 left in the second quarter, the Fever led by 23 points, 51-28.

Clark had an outstanding first half with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 7 of her game-high 11 assists. Mitchell had 16 points in the first half on 6-of-9 shooting.
