Canton tops Old Saybrook for 10th straight win and moves into semifinals

CANTON, May 31 – Sophomore Abby Charron had five goals and four assists as the Canton High girls lacrosse team moved into the Class S semifinals for the third straight year following a 19-9 victory over No. 7 Old Saybrook on Thursday at the turf field.

Canton goalie Courtney LeFave had a season-high 16 saves in net as the Warriors (17-2) won their tenth straight game. The Warrior defense, led by senior captain Tady Whitney, junior captain Madi Bahre, junior Morgan Walzak and sophomore Anna Miller, played well, giving up just two goals in the first half.

Offensively, Canton continued to share the wealth. Charron scored five goals along with sophomore Julianna Iovine and junior Allie Delsanto. Sophomore Ashley Huff had two goals while junior Ashley Potter and sophomore Maeve Balavender had one goal each.

Canton won plenty of draws to keep control of the game, which played at a fast pace. The Warriors led 12-2 at halftime.

Canton will face No. 3 East Catholic (16-2) in the semifinals on Tuesday at a neutral location. East Catholic is the last team to beat the Warriors this season with a 10-9 overtime victory in Manchester on April 30.

No. 4 New Fairfield (18-3) will face No. 1 North Branford (17-2) in the other semifinal contest.
