Two-out rally in seventh inning lifts undefeated Avon to 11th straight win

Catcher Anna Kelley had two hits and RBI sacrifice fly in Tuesday’s come-from-behind win over Rocky Hill at Sperry Park.

In the first 10 games of the season, the Avon High softball team played just four games that went beyond five innings, contests that were ended early due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Falcons got a challenge on Tuesday. Avon erased a three-run deficit with four runs in the sixth and seventh inning to beat Rocky Hill, 6-5 in a Central Connecticut Conference contest at the new Sperry Park softball diamond in Avon and win their 11th straight game.

Madison Jette’s two-out double to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Falcons (11-0) the victory over a Rocky Hill team (7-4) that came into the game leading the CCC South. Jette was 2-for-2 in the game with a single, double and four RBI.

The Terriers led 5-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Brianna Connellan singled to lead off the inning but was still sitting on first base with two outs after a strikeout and a pop fly.

On the first pitch she saw from Rocky Hill pitcher Ingris Lin, Avon catcher Anna Kelley kept the Falcons alive with a single to center field. That set the stage for Jette and her game-winning hit.

Avon cut the Rocky Hill lead to two runs in the sixth inning. Fallyn Banks led off with a triple followed by Kelley, who walked. Banks scored on a sacrifice fly from Jette to center field with Kelley moving to second base.

Meredith Parker singled and pitcher Lena Stortz reached on an error to load the bases with one out. Lin got the second out of the inning on an infield fly.

Avon’s Jessica Mizia singled to right field, driving in Kelly from third to cut the lead to one, 5-4. Rocky Hill outfielder Mia Ferreira threw out Parker, who was trying to score from second base, at the plate to end the inning.

Stortz, who came on in relief of Mizia on the mound, pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless softball to give Avon a chance to rally. She gave up just two hits, walked just one and struck out one.

Connellan was 3-for-4 for Avon with two runs scored while Banks was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs scored.

Avon took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a double from Jette and a sacrifice fly from Kelley.

Rocky Hill was led by catcher Brooklyn Schoen, who was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Juliana Incarvito, Mia Cristalli, Peyton Morello and Lianna Tejeda each had two hits for the Terriers. Tejeda drove in two runs.

Avon returns to action on Thursday when they host Suffield (1-6) at Sperry Park, followed by a game at Simsbury (3-6) on Friday at 3:45 p.m.
