Wang holds off Ting to win first pro tournament at Women’s Championship

AVON, July 26, 2026 – The season didn’t start that well for Christine Wang on the Epson Tour, the developmental tour for the LPGA. She missed the cut in five of her first seven tournaments of the season. She missed the cut at last week’s Greater Toledo Open.

She missed Pro-Am event this week and on Tuesday rain kept her from getting a good look the Golf Club of Avon course.

But she figured it out.

Wang held off a fourth round challenge from Mirabel Ting of Malaysia to earn her first professional win by one-stroke at the Hartford HealthCare Women’s Championship before a few hundred at the Golf Club of Avon.

She finished with a 13-under-par 271 with Ting finishing second with a 12-under-par 272. Kaleiya Romero matched the low round of the tournament with a 7-under-par 64 and leaped 15 places into third place with her total of  nine-under-par 275.

“Mirabel is a great player and I knew that before today,” Wang said. “Her reputation preceded her. I knew it would be tough out there today. I just hoped every time she made a putt that I did, too. I tried to stay in the moment with every swing I took.”

Wang began the fourth and final round with a three-shot lead and with birdies on the first two holes, she extended her lead over Ting to five shots.

But Wang had a bogey at three while Ting secured a birdie to cut the lead back to three. Ting got a birdie on nine to cut Wang’s lead to two. Both players birdied at 11 but Ting cut the lead to one stroke with a birdie at the 14th hole.

Ting got a birdie at 16 that would have tied the score. Wang needed a birdie to maintain her lead. She was nine to 10 feet away from the hole, which was on a downhill trajectory.

“That putt was extremely downhill,” Wang said. “When it is downhill, you never know how much it will break. We saw a line and I thought I will do my best and get my shot. Luckily, it went in.”

The putt preserved Wang’s one-stroke lead, which she protected over the final two holes.

Wang’s last victory came in the 2023 California Women’s Amateur tournament.

“Christine is incredible. What a battle she had this week with the golf course that our (Epson Tour) players are not typically accustomed to with the long rough and quick greens. She is such a worthy champion,” tournament director Patrick O’Connor said.

“I think this is the hardest course we’ve played this year (on the Epson Tour),” said Romero. “It’s tight, the greens are fast. The greens are firm. You have to hit it straight, the rough is thick.”

Added Wang, “The course favors people who hit it straight, who hit it on the green and who can putt on really fast greens. I like all of those things, so I really liked this course.”

Ting finished Sunday with a five-under 66 to finish second. After a tough Friday when she was 5-over 76, she had back-to-back rounds with no bogies and 12 birdies over her final 36 holes in Avon for her seventh top 10 finish of the season.

Romero had three consecutive birdies on holes 12 through 14 and an eagle at No. 16, a par five to help her rise into third place. She was tied for 17^th after three rounds. It was her sixth top 10 finish of the season.

Cythnia Lu and Anne Chen rounded out the top five, signing for 72-hole tournament scores of 8-under and 7-under, respectfully.

O’Connor estimated that more than 3,000 fans attended the tournament this week. He said they had close to 750 fans on Saturday. It could have been more on Sunday he didn’t have the numbers after the tournament concluded.

Wang won $37,500 for taking the tournament, which had a purse of $250,000.

This was the first year of a three-year deal to host the tournament in Avon at the Golf Club of Avon after three years in Milford.
