WINSTED, Sept. 18, 2026 – Quarterback Joe Lewie had a career-high four touchdown runs and ran for 121 yards as the Granby/Canton co-op football team rolled to a 56-12 win over old rival Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic on Friday night under portable lights at Van Why Field.
The two schools were long-time rivals in the Pequot Conference before the Yellowjackets moved to the Naugatuck Valley League in 2022.
Granby/Canton (2-0) scored a co-op record 56 points, eclipsing their previous record of 54 in victories over Gilbert/Northwestern in 2019 (54-14) and the Windsor Locks co-op program in 2024 (54-0).
Gabe Mensah ran for 125 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries while Michael LaPenta had four tackles and a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown.
“The boys flew around and dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball,” Granby/Canton head coach Erik Shortell said. “Played super, super physical. Very proud of the team.”
Lewis completed 7-of-13 passes for 98 yards and a 33-yard TD pass to Elijah Sam. Keandre Hunter also ran for a touchdown for the Bears, who travel to Rockville next week.

HARTFORD, Sept. 18, 2026 – Evan Herron ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns as the Avon/St. Paul co-op squad beat Capital Prep/First Achievement on Friday night at Hartford Public High for their first victory of the season and first win as a co-op football program.
“We were more physical especially considering their size on the front line. I thought we played with way more effort,” Avon/St. Paul coach Kerry Graves said. “We’re trying to play one game at a time and if we execute and do what we need to do, good things will happen and good things did happen.”
Joel Adinortey and Alex Schwartz each had interceptions for Avon/St. Paul.
