AVON, June 1 – It’s been quite a week for the Avon High girls tennis team.

In their final season in the North Central Connecticut Conference, the Falcons (10-9, 9-1 NCCC) finished second to Ellington in the league. The Purple Knights ran the table, going 10-0 including a 4-3 decision over Avon in early May.

However, Avon extracted some revenge by capturing the NCCC Tournament in Suffield last week with three players winning in singles and two teams winning in doubles to give Avon a 23-21 decision over Ellington.

Avon continues its late-season surge with a pair of victories in the Class M tournament. The Falcons, ranked No. 26 in the tournament, went on the road to beat No. 7 Waterford, 4-3 on Saturday. On Monday, Avon eliminated No. 10 Woodstock Academy, 4-3, indoors at Pomfret School.

That earned Avon (12-9) a berth in the Class M quarterfinals against No. 2 and undefeated Stonington (15-0) on Tuesday at 3 p.m. on the road. Avon is in the quarterfinals for the fourth straight season.

Against Waterford, No. 1 singles player Kendall Held, No. 2 Tait Becker, No. 3 Riley Abate won in singles for Avon along with No. 3 doubles team Rachel Selzer and Olivia Levin. Against Woodstock Academy, Held, Becker and Abate won in singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Sara Chow and Shayna Anderson earned the victory.

In the NCCC Tournament in Suffield, Held, Abate, who is undefeated this season at No. 3 and Gaby Burns at No. 4 singles won individual titles. Becker finished second at No. 2 singles. In doubles, Levin and Selzer won a title at No. 3 doubles while Avon’s No. 2 doubles team of Cathy Jenner and Sara Chow finished second.
