MIDDLETOWN, June 3 – Avon senior Molly Hamel finished second in the 3,200 meters and won two medals to lead the Avon High girls track and field team at the Class MM championships on a wet and chilly Tuesday afternoon. For the Avon boys, Geoff Kirk won three medals in the javelin, shot put and discus.
Hamel finished second in the 3,200 meters in a season-best time of 11:14.05, less than 0.19 of a second behind Rockville’s Haley Hasty and just a second off the school record time. It was good enough to earn a berth to run at next Monday’s State Open championships at New Britain’s Willow Brook Park. Teammate Rachael Martin was tenth in 11:51.10.
Hamel also finished fourth in the 1,600 meters in a time of 5.15.24 seconds with her fourth place finish earning her a State Open invitation. Martin also finished ninth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:35 while teammate Ryley Higgins was tenth in 5:35.24.
Avon’s 4×400 relay team of Jennifer Koo, Emma Schweitzer, Carly Regalado and Shipa Donde finished second with a time of 4:11.29. Windsor, which won the Class MM title, ran away in the 4×400 relay with a winning time of 4:02.53 seconds.
In the pole vault, Kaely Quijano finished third with a leap of nine feet, 6 inches while Kiely Quijano was seventh with a leap of 8-6. Regalado was tenth in the 100 hurdles in 17.36.
Two Avon relay teams brought home medals. The 4×100 relay (Tara Shayler, Emma Schweizter, Carly Carpino, Chamiyah Rowland) was fifth in 51.89 while the 4×800 relay (Madison Sides, Hannah Carpino, Ryley Higgins, Alexander Kolb) was sixth in 10:31.13. The 4×400 relay and 4×100 relay each qualified to compete at the State Open.
Windsor won the girls title with a comfortable 83-58 win over Nonnewaug with Berlin (45) taking third. The Falcons were tenth with 28 points.
Kirk brought home three medals by taking sixth in the shot (43-3), seventh in the javelin (143-01) and eighth in the discus (112-0). He threw 112 feet in the discus on his first throw and then fouled on three of his remaining four throws. In the javelin, he threw 143 feet, 1 inch on his final throw.
Andrew Suter earned medal by finishing eighth in the 3,200 meters in a personal-best time of 10:09.02.
Hillhouse won the boys title with a 95-83½ victory over East Lyme. Avon was 21st with seven points.
