Canton pulls away from Kaynor Tech to earn spot in quarters

WATERBURY, March 6 – For the first time since 1999, the Canton High girls basketball team has advanced to the Class S quarterfinals in consecutive seasons after a 51-35 win over No. 7 Kaynor Tech Friday night.

All-NCCC sophomore forward Sarah Benedetti led the way with a game-high 28 points and 11 rebounds. Katherine Curvino had 10 points while Danielle Coutu had nine assists to go along with her two points.

Canton had a 10-point lead at halftime and the Panthers cut the lead to two, 32-30, late in the third quarter but the Warriors went on a 6-0 run to pull away. Canton outscored Kaynor, 13-5 in the final quarter.

No. 9 Canton (17-6) will face top-ranked Wamogo (21-1) in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 12 at Lewis Mills in Burlington at 7:45 p.m.
