Culkin has pair of top 10 finishes at Class M meet

NEW HAVEN, March 18 — Ten Avon swimmers, including a pair of girls, qualified for the Class M finals Wednesday at Wesleyan University where Avon finished 12th. Senior Mike Culkin had the only top 10 finishes, placing eighth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:00.74 and 10th in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.08.

The 200 freestyle relay team (freshman Zach Cesaro, Culkin, junior Zack Loughlin, junior Vince Savarese) finished 12th in 1:34.06 while the 400 freestyle relay team (Cesaro, Culkin, Saverse, Loughlin) was also 12th in 3:28.92. The 200 medley relay team (Casey Donahue, John Hla, Matt Correnti, Keegan Johnson) finished 14th in 1:49.84.

For the fourth straight year, seniors Jillian Strassner and Cassie Cesaro qualified for the finals and earned points for the team in the 100 backstroke. Cesaro finished 18th in 1:00.46 while Strassner was 19th in 59.88. She qualified for a slower heat and couldn’t finish any higher than 19th.

Also earning points for the Falcons were Savarese (18th) and Zac Cesaro (24th) in the 200 individual medley, Loughlin in the 50 free (15th) and 100 free (14th), John Andrade in diving (15th) and Dillon Ade (16th), John Hla (17th) and Nick Sauerbrunn (20th) in the 100 breast stroke.
