Two Avon teams win Connecticut Cup titles

SIMSBURY, June 13 – Two boys teams from the Avon Soccer Club earned championships in the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association’s (CJSA) Connecticut Cup spring state tournament at Curtiss Park.

The U-14 Avon Pumas (10-0, 5-0 tournament) won the tournament with a 4-2 victory over New Haven in the championship game. Marek Jablonski coached the team, which also won a divisional title in the CJSA’s NorthCentral League.

Avon United, a U-11 team that plays 8 vs. 8, shared the Connecticut Cup title with Easton Redding Gold after a 1-1 tie in the final. They are the first Avon teams to win a Connecticut Cup title since an Avon Soccer Club U-13 boys team won in 2005 and 2003.

Doug Hope’s U-19 Avon squad fell in the championship final, dropping a 2-1 decision to Hamden. The U-19 team, which shared a divisional title in the CJSA’s NorthCentral League, finished the season with a record of 7-2 and 3-1 in the Cup tournament.

All three Avon teams had exciting semifinal victories. The Pumas won their fourth straight Cup game with a 3-2 win over West Hartford. Avon United beat Wethersfield, 4-1 in the semifinals of the U-11 division.
