AVON, May 30 – The Liverpool Soccer Club from Oxford, Mass., won four championships at the 23rd Avon Memorial Day soccer tournament at Fisher Meadow. An estimated 1,500 athletes on 92 boys and girls soccer teams from Connecticut and five other states competed on a glorious weekend with sunny skies and a cool breeze for most of the tournament.Liverpool won the girls Under 11 Emerald title and Under 13 girls title with perfect records of 5-0. Two other Liverpool girls teams in the U-11 Ruby division and the U15/U16 division finished second.
On the boys side, Liverpool won two of four divisions taking the U11 division with a 4-0-1 mark and the U15-16 division on a tiebreaker. In the U15/U16 division, :Liverpool and the Avon Pumas each finished with records of 3-1-1, good for 10 points. But Liverpool won the first place trophy courtesy of its 1-0 win over the Pumas.
Among valley teams, the Simsbury Lightning won the U-11 Ruby girls division. Simsbury and Liverpool each earned 13 points and battled to a tie with each other. It went to a tiebreaker and Simsbury prevailed for allowing just two goals in the tournament compared to five for Liverpool.
The Simsbury Sensation was second in the U-12 girls division with a 4-1 record. The Burlington Blizzard won the sportsmanship award in the U-11 Ruby division while another Burlington team captured the sportsmanship trophy in the U-13 girls division.
In the boys competition, the Avon Pumas in the U-15/U-16 division finished second, despite tying Liverpool with a 3-1-1 record. Liverpool took home the trophy courtesy of its 1-0 win over the Pumas.
Avon United tied Londonderry, N.H., in the Boys U-12 division with each team going 3-0-2 in the tournament. Londonderry prevailed thanks to its three shutouts compared to two for Avon United.
For the first time, all of the boys and girls games were played in Avon at the Fisher Meadows Recreational Complex, Avon Old Farms, Pine Grove Elementary School and Thompson Brook Middle School.
