Busy finish for Warriors boys tennis team

CANTON, June 4 —  After two weeks of rain and few matches, the Canton boys tennis team got its fill of competition. On the same day the Warriors competed in the NCCC league tournament, they had to play a pair of dual meets.

In a match that began at 8:30 a.m., the Warriors beat Enfield, 7-0. They were supposed to face Ellington shortly afterward but the Knights were unwilling to play at that early hour and faced Canton after the conclusion of the NCCC tournament.

Ellington, which didn’t compete in the league tournament, earned a 4-3 win over a tired Warrior squad, who finished the dual meet season at 6-8.
Avon easily won the NCCC tournament with 70 points as they won all four singles and three doubles tournaments. Suffield was a distant second with 22 points while Canton was third with 21 points.

Canton’s Peter Jutras fell in the No. 1 singles final to Avon’s Alex Dahlen, 6-2, 6-4 while teammate Ben Corbett lost to Avon’s Michael VanDusen in the No. 4 singles final, 6-2, 6-3. Canton’s Chris Coleman and Eric Scott lost to Avon’s Evan Selzer and Alex Saslow in the No. 3 doubles final, 6-4, 6-2.

“I’m proud of our player’s effort and even more satisfied with their heart, mental fortitude and desire to compete on a very hot, humid spring day when they were asked to play two additional matches,” Canton coach Dante Boffi said. “There wasn’t one complaint, not one moment of hesitation. They truly lived up their school name. They were Warriors.”

At the Class S tournament, Jutras won two matches before getting eliminated in the third round. Alex BoonVanOstade also won a singles match. The doubles teams of Chris Coleman and Eric Scott went 1-1 in the tournament along with Pat Tong and Tyler VanKirk.
