AVON, June 4 – Three Avon High relay teams and senior Emily Kelly qualified to compete in the State Open girls track and field championships in New Britain.
At last week’s CIAC Class MM championship meet in Middletown, Kelly finished fifth in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:25.07, knocking three seconds off the time she had a week earlier at the NCCC championship meet.
Avon’s 4×100 (Catherine Jordan, Kelsey Burton, Stephanie Koo, Kristina Shayler), 4×400 (Koo, Sarah Hudak, Shayler, Kelly) and 4×800 relay teams (Cassie Sahl, Sarah Stokesbury, Kelly, Rachael Rosow) each qualified for the Open.
The 4×100 relay team took fourth with a time of 51.99, just 0.03 seconds off the school-record time they set a week earlier at the NCCC championship meet. The 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams each finished fifth in Class MM. The 4×400 relay dropped 13 seconds from its NCCC performance.
The Avon girls finished 12th in the Class MM meet with 22.5 points. Senior Stephanie Koo finished sixth in the 100 meters with a time of 13.1 seconds. Rosow also took seventh in the 3,200 with a time of 12:09.96, which was nearly 14 seconds better than her winning time at the NCCC championship meet a week earlier. Shayler was 10th in the 300 hurdles with a season-best time of 50.39.
For the Avon boys, Greg Rendeiro was 10th in the long jump with a leap of 19-3 feet and 13th in the triple jump with a leap of 39-7. Avon’s 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams each finished tenth. The Avon boys failed to score a point. Only the top eight finishers in each event earn points.
