The visiting Somerset Patriots scored five runs in the ninth inning to come from behind and defeat the Hartford Yard Goats 9-6 in front of 6,369 fans on Sunday afternoon at Dunkin’ Park. The Yard Goats had a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning and a 6-4 lead in the ninth inning before the Patriots rallied to win. Dyan Jorge cranked a two-run homer and Jared Thomas and Skyler Messinger each had two hits for Hartford. Yard Goats starter Konner Eaton allowed just two hits over the first five innings, completed six innings, surrendered two runs on three hits, and left with a 4-2 lead. Somerset made it 4-3 on Jace Avina’s RBI single in the seventh inning against reliever Fidel Ulloa and then tied the game in the eighth inning on a throwing error. The Yard Goats took a 6-4 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a squeeze play and infield grounder. However, the Patriots scored five runs in the ninth to take a 9-6 lead off reliever Victor Juarez. The inning began with back-to-back doubles and a walk to load the bases. Jace Avina then walked with the bases loaded to make it 6-5, and DJ Gladney’s sacrifice fly tied the game at 6-6. Later in the inning, Manny Palencia’s RBI single scored Avina, giving Somerset a 7-6 lead. The Patriots added two more runs on an error and hit batsman.

A poor third quarter doomed the Sun in a 77-68 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday night in Los Angeles. The Sparks (13-24) outscored Connecticut by 12 points in the third quarter to turn an eight-point halftime lead into a 20-point advantage. Rae Burrell had 20 points for Los Angeles, who ended a six-game losing streak. The Sun (9-27) were led by Saniya Rivers with 14 points and Leila Lacan with 13 points and four assists. Brittney Griner and Aaliyah Edwards again missed the game with injuries.

Hartford’s Dyan Jorge stole second base in the 9th inning to establish a new franchise record (47) but the Yard Goats fell to the Somerset Patriots 9-5 in 10 innings in front of 7,101 fans on Saturday night at Dunkin’ Park. Jorge, who was tied with current Colorado Rockies OF Cole Carrigg, who swiped 46 bases last year in Hartford, stole second base and was the potential winning run in the ninth inning. However, the Yard Goats left him stranded and Somerset scored four runs in the 10th inning to win in Hartford for the third time in five games. Cole Messina and Andy Perez each hit home runs for the Yard Goats. The began as a fantastic pitchers’ duel between Yard Goats righty Connor Staine and Somerset rookie Rony Fox. Staine only allowed one baserunner, an infield single over the first six innings. He struck out five and retired 18 of the first 20 batters faced. Fox was tough as well and permitted just two hits over the first five innings while retiring 15 of 17 batters faced. The Yard Goats came back in the bottom of the seventh inning and tied the game at 5-5. Hartford started the rally with three straight doubles. Braylen Wimmer led off with a double followed by back-to-back RBI doubles by Jack O’Dowd and Dyan Jorge to make it 5-3. Next, Cole Messina cranked a two-run homer and tied the game at 5-5. Somerset scored three runs in the 10th inning off reliever Hunter Mann to take a 9-5 lead. Josh Moylan had a two-run single in the frame. The Yard Goats loaded the bases but Rossi struck out Jack O’Dowd with the bases loaded to end the game.

GJ Hill and Cole Messina homered as the Hartford Yard Goats defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-1 in the opener of Friday night’s doubleheader in front of a sellout crowd of 6,841 at Dunkin’ Park. The home runs were part of a four-run first inning that gave the Yard Goats a 4-0 lead. Messina finished with a career-high five RBI and Jared Thomas went 3-4 with a pair of singles and a double to help Hartford win the first game. Yard Goats starter Bryson Hammer allowed just one run on six hits with two strikeouts to earn his first Double-A win. The Patriots won the nightcap 6-0.

In game two, Somerset starter Cade Smith shut the Yard Goats offense down, tossing six scoreless innings and allowing just one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts. Somerset struck first by scoring two runs off Yard Goats starter Cade Denton in the top of the first. Omar Alfonzo started the scoring with an RBI-double that gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead. Alfonzo would score later in the inning on an RBI-sac-fly to center field from DJ Gladney which extended Somerset’s lead to 2-0. The Patriots added to their lead in the top of the fourth when Josh Moylan hit a two-run home run, his ninth of the season, making the score 4-0.

GJ Hill smashed a three-run homer but the Hartford Yard Goats fell to the Somerset Patriots 10-4 on Wednesday night at Dunkin’ Park. Hill’s 15th homer of the season came in the first inning and gave the Yard Goats an early 3-0 lead. The Yard Goats led 4-2 heading to the top of the eighth before DJ Gladney hit a three-run home run which gave Somerset a 5-4 lead. Yard Goats starter Stu Flesland III allowed just two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in seven innings.

Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike goes to the basket during Tuesday’s game in Boston against the Connecticut Sun. The following day Ogwumike announced she would be retiring from the game after 15 seasons in the WNBA. She played 13 seasons in LA and won one WNBA title. Connecticut’s Kennedy Burke defends on the play.

In front of more than 16,000 at TD Garden in Boston, the Sun beat the Sparks, 85-77 to snap a two-game losing streak. Olivia Nelson-Ododa led the Sun with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Kennedy Burke scored 17 points, including 13 points in the third quarter.  The Sun never trailed.

Andy Perez smashed a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth and Jacob Humphrey recorded his first Double-A hit and RBI as the Hartford Yard Goats defeated the Somerset Patriots 6-5 on Tuesday night at Dunkin’ Park. The game was tied 5-5 before Perez’s eighth home run of the season landed in the second deck of the right field seats and gave the Yard Goats a 6-5 lead. WIth two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Yard Goats catcher Cole Messina threw out DJ Gladney as he was trying to steal second to secure the win. Yard Goats reliever Hunter Mann pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to earn his first Double-A win.

The Hartford Yard Goats fell to the Detroit Tigers affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves, 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Dunkin’ Park. It was Hartford’s third straight one-run loss. Thayron Liranzo homered, and Zhhir Hope had a two-run single helping Erie build a 4-0 lead before the Yard Goats rallied late. Cole Messina cranked a two-run homer in the ninth inning to make it a 5-4 game but reliever Tyler Owens recorded the final out to secure the win for the visitors. Braylen Wimmer had two hits and scored two runs for the Yard Goats who continue their homestand on Tuesday (7:10 PM) against the New York Yankees affiliate, the Somerset Patriots.

The Hartford Yard Goats lost to the Detroit Tigers affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves, 5-4 on Saturday night in front of 7,143 fans at Dunkin’ Park. Jimmy Obertop delivered a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning to give the Yard Goats a 4-3 lead. However, the SeaWolves scored two runs in the sixth inning on a wild pitch and a two-out single to take a 5-4 lead. Hartford right-hander Connor Staine delivered five strong innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out six. Jack O’Dowd led Hartford at the plate, going 3-4 with two singles, including an RBI and a double. Hartford responded in the bottom of the sixth. Braylen Wimmer ripped a double into left field before Jack O’Dowd followed with a sharp single to the opposite side, moving Wimmer to third. GJ Hill then lined a ball over the right fielder’s head, scoring Wimmer and advancing O’Dowd to third. The Yard Goats inched closer, trailing 3-2 with both runners in scoring position. Jimmy Obertop followed with a clutch single into center, scoring both runners and giving Hartford a 4-3 lead.  In the top of the eighth Erie regained the lead. Andrew Jenkins lined a single before Izaac Pacheco drew a walk. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and another wild pitch brought home Jenkins to tie the game 4-4. Roberto Campos followed with an RBI single to score Pacheco and give the SeaWolves a 5-4 lead.

A low crossing pass from Hartford’s Barry Coffey was blocked by a defender and caromed into the net during stoppage time as the Hartford Athletic escaped with a 2-1 win over Miami FC in USL Championship play on Saturday night at Trinity Health Stadium. With the win Hartford (5-5-9) moves into eighth place in the Eastern Conference with the top eight teams earning a playoff bid. Miami (5-9-7) slips into ninth place. Hartford took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Barry Coffey scored his fourth goal of the season. Andrés Hernández clipped cross found the Coffey, who had his initial effort saved, but finished off the chance from close range after Miami goalkeeper Eloy Room had denied a rebound header by Abdullah Taofeek. Miami tied it at 1-1 in stoppage time at the end of the first half as Jürgen Locadia ripped home a shot on a setup by Mason Tunbridge. Hartford goalie Antony Siaha made three saves. Next, Hartford hosts Birmingham Legion on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.

The Hartford Yard Goats fell to the Erie SeaWolves 2-1 on Friday night at Dunkin’ Park. Yard Goats left-hander Bryson Hammer made his Dunkin’ Park debut tossing 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and recording four strikeouts. Erie right-hander Lucas Elissalt made his Double-A debut, throwing 4.1 innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out nine. The SeaWolves scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk to Woody Hadeen and a sacrifice fly from Payton Graham to take a 2-0 lead. Hartford responded in the bottom of the inning when GJ Hill launched a solo home run to cut the deficit to 2-1. Hill had three hits in the game. The Yard Goats had several chances to score runs but went 0-10 with runners in scoring position and left 8 men on base. The bullpen of Davis Palermo and Hunter Mann fired 4.2 scoreless innings of relief.  It was Hill’s 14th home run of the season.

The Hartford Yard Goats fell to the Detroit Tigers affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves, 3-1 on Thursday night at Dunkin’ Park. Erie starter Carlos Pena and three relievers held the Yard Goats to just one run to win the third game of the six-game series. Hartford scored its only run in the seventh inning on Jared Thomas’ RBI single, his third hit of the game. The Yard Goats had the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth innings, runners at second and third in the ninth, and left 14 men on base. Jack O’Dowd had four hits, including a double and Hartford starting pitcher Stu Flesland III matched a season-high with seven strikeouts over five innings.  The SeaWolves struck first in the opening inning when Seth Stephenson lined an RBI double to left field, scoring Roberto Campos to give Erie a 1-0 lead. Stephenson later came around to score on a passed ball, extending the SeaWolves’ advantage to 2-0. Flesland kept Erie off the scoreboard over the next several innings and finished his outing with five innings pitched and seven strikeouts, matching his season high. The left-hander lowered his ERA to 1.91.

The Hartford Yard Goats defeated the Detroit Tigers affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves, 4-3 in front of 6,781 fans on Wednesday night at Dunkin’ Park. After building a 3-0 lead through seven innings, Hartford surrendered three runs over the final two innings before Jared Thomas delivered a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory. Dyan Jorge and Andy Perez each recorded two hits and drove in a run, while GJ Hill scored twice and reached base three times. Yard Goats starter Konnor Eaton tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six. Yard Goats bullpen had a combined 14 strikeouts in the win. Hartford broke through in the third inning when GJ Hill lined a single and stole second base before advancing to third. Dyan Jorge followed with an RBI single to right field, scoring Hill and giving the Yard Goats a 1-0 lead. Eaton kept the SeaWolves off the scoreboard through five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six batters.

In the quarterfinals of the USL Cup, defending champion Hartford advanced to the semifinals with a 4-2 win over Charlotte Independence of the USL League One on Wednesday night. Sadat Anaku had two goals for Hartford to help the Athletic take a 2-0 lead at the half. Anaku scored his first goal in the 23rd minute and made it 2-0 in the 36th minute. Adewale Obalola pushed Hartford’s advantage to 3-0 in the 52nd minute, deflecting in a beautiful ball from the edge of the pitch. Just 15 minutes later in the 67th minute, Hartford cushioned their lead further to 4-0 as Augi Williams sent home a header for the goal. The Athletic return to action on Saturday when they host Miami FC in USL Championship play at Trinity Health Stadium at 7 p.m.

Andrew Jenkins delivered a go-ahead two-run double giving the SeaWolves the lead in the sixth inning. Braylen Wimmer and Mike Antico drove in runs for the Yard Goats, while Cade Denton delivered 3.2 strong innings of relief, striking out five and retiring 10 of the 13 batters he faced. Six Erie pitchers held Hartford to just two runs.

Binghamton’s Billy Amick’s go-ahead three run homer in the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Mets affiliate swept the Yard Goats in a six-game series. The Yard Goats return to Dunkin’ Park on Tuesday to host the Detroit Tigers affiliate, the Erie Seawolves.

A second half goal from Jordan Scarlett helped Hartford (4-5-9) earn a 1-1 tie with Indy Eleven in USL Championship play on Sunday. Indy Eleven (6-7-4) rippled twine early as Jack Blake sent a direct pass to the box from the edge of the pitch, finding the head of Edward Kizza who tapped home the night’s opening score in the third minute. Hartford had a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half but couldn’t score. However, in the 74th minute, Hartford knotted the score at one-all as Scarlett headed in a perfectly placed pass by Sebastian Anderson. Hartford finished the game owning advantages in shots on target (5-4), shot attempts (18-10), and corner kicks (9-2). In goal, Hartford’s Antony Siaha made three saves.

Yard Goats starter Stu Flesland took a no-hitter into the seventh inning but the Binghamton Rumble Ponies got a run in the eighth inning to beat Hartford 1-0 on Friday night at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton, New York. Flesland fired seven scoreless innings and allowed only one hit, and one walk with seven strikeouts. Kevin Parada doubled home John Bay in the eighth for the only run of the game sending the Yard Goats to a season-high fifth straight loss. Hartford outfielder GJ Hill extended his hit streak to five consecutive games and eight of nine, however, the Yard Goats lost to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 23-3 on Thursday night at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton, New York. The Mets affiliate cranked four homers including a pair of three-run shots as part of an eight run third inning while setting a new franchise record for runs. Mitch Voit had five hits and Billy Amick belted two homers and had 6 RBI as the Rumble Ponies defeated the Yard Goats for the third time this week. Hill had two hits for the Yard Goats and Mike Antico hit a solo home run. The road trip continued tomorrow night at 7:00 PM and the Yard Goats return home next Tuesday to host the Detroit Tigers affiliate, the Erie Seawolves at Dunkin’ Park.
