Avon routs Monroe, earn final 16 bid

AVON, July 20 – It was easier than expected but that’s OK. It was warm out Wednesday afternoon at Avon Old Farms. The Avon American Legion baseball team earned a spot in the final 16 of the Connecticut state tournament for the first time with a 12-2 decision over Monroe in eight innings. The game was called due to the 10-run mercy run.

Avon (21-7) had 16 hits in the game and was led by pitcher Brendan Telfer, who had a perfect game through five innings. In six innings work, Telfer allowed just two hits, struck out three and walked two. “When he is on, he is as good as anyone,” Avon coach Brian Doyle said. Cody Doyle was 4-for-5 with a double while Liam O’Connor had three hits. Tyler D’Onofrio and Matt Jadovich each had two hits.

Avon faces Zone 3 champion Middletown on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. at Palmer Field in Middletown. Three other Zone 1 teams are in the final 16 double elimination event. Bristol earned a berth as the Zone 1 champion while Unionville and Southington each won a pair of qualifying games to make the final 16.
