Despite 20 hits, Avon splits first two contests

UNCASVILLE, July 22 – The Avon Major Division baseball (ages 11-12) All-Star team isn’t struggling to hit the ball. In the first two games of its Section II tournament, Avon has 10 hits in each of their games.

It wasn’t enough in its opener, a 6-5 loss to nearby Jewett City as the District 11 champions rallied from a three-run deficit and scored three runs in the fifth inning on a home run from Camden Edmond. Jewett City had just three hits in the game and two were home runs.

But Avon (8-1, 1-1 Section II) rebounded quickly with a solid 5-0 win over District 8 champion Tolland on Thursday with another 10-hit performance. Avon played some stellar defense to dominate Tolland and earn the shutout. Pitchers Kyle Emery and Andrew Marshall combined to pitch 5 2/3 innings and struck out eight.

Justin Olson led the way against Tolland with three hits, including a double. Ian McDonald had a home run and single while Chris Jacobs had a home run and a two-RBI double that gave Avon a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning. Evan Deckers followed with an RBI triple for a 5-0 advantage.

Against Jewett City, Olson was 3-for-4 at the plate with a single, triple and home run. Emery added a single and a two-RBI home run in the fifth inning.
