AVON, July 15 — Avon (20-8, 20-7 zone) clinched second place in Zone 1 for the second straight year with a 4-3 win over Torrington. Avon erased a three-run Torrington lead helped in part by a key two-RBI single from Tyler D’Onofrio.
Teams that finish second in a zone have to win only one game to earn a spot in the final 16 of the state tournament. Simsbury and Avon each finished 20-7 in the zone but Avon earned the No. 2 seed because they won two of the three games between the two local squads.
