Canton girls team snaps five school records

CANTON, May 7 – The Canton High boys track and field program gets its share of publicity. And with 21 straight dual meet victories and a NCCC and Class S championship a year ago, the boys have earned the notoriety.

However, the Canton High girls track and field program continues to grow and their athletes are breaking records. In the past two weeks, five school records have fallen, including three from the initial varsity campaign of 2007.

Anna Waite finished 14th in the javelin at the Dan O’Grady Relays on April 28 in Danbury with a throw of 86 feet and eight inches but it was more than enough to top the previous school record of 82-9 by Katie Noonan in 2009.

In the 200 meters, Alex Martin raced to a school-record time of 27.94 at the Connecticut Elite Night Invitational at the Plumb Hill facility in Litchfield on Friday, erasing the old record of 28.18 set by Lucy Mentzer in 2007. Martin finished fourth.

In the 300 hurdles, Kiley Loureiro was second at the Connecticut Elite Night meet with a school-record time of 51.32, nipping the previous mark of 51.94 run by Tyisha Alexander in 2009.

Two relays set school records. At the Connecticut Elite Night meet, Canton’s 4×400 relay team of Jamie Asklof, Jamie Haberen, Kiley Loureiro and Martin finished second with a school-record time of 4:25.69, shattering the old record of 4:32 set in 2009. In a 65-35 loss to Stafford last Wednesday, Canton’s 4×800 relay (LeighAna Rossitto, Emily Jarka, Isabella Albin, Eliza Chekas) set a new school record with a time of 11:26.9, breaking the old mark of 11:42 set in 2007.
