Falcons win SCGGL title, league tournament

AVON, June 5 — The Avon High girls golf team was unchallenged in the Southern Connecticut Girls Golf League this spring. The Falcons ran the table, going a perfect 12-0 in the league, to capture its first outright league championship and won the SCGGL Tournament for the second straight year. Marissa Grillo won the league title with a 76 at Hawk’s Nest in Southington.

Now, the Falcons want to move up at the CIAC girls golf championship tournament. Avon finished seventh in the state with a 393 at Orange Hills Country Club in Greenwich. It was the best finish for the Falcons since 2007 when they were sixth in the state. Fairfield Warde (381), Danbury (386) and New Canaan (388) were close to the Falcons. State champion Berlin (348), Farmington (355) and Greenwich (366) had some distance on the rest of the field.

“The girls were disappointed,” Avon High coach Patrick Welkey admitted. “We didn’t play as well as could have and I know they wanted to have a stronger finish to a very good season. We will learn from it and work hard at building on the many things that we accomplished this season.”

Grillo earned All-State honors for the second straight year. She also earned All-SCGGL honors along with Alexa Gentile and Alana Pulling. Catherine Ponziani earned second team honors.

Four of the five starters will return. Gentile graduates this spring and will play for Quinnipiac next spring. “She has been a great for four years as a golfer and a truly good person who has cared about the other girls on the team and the program’s success,” Welkey said.
