Opening salvo by Avon too much for Canton in D6 tournament

AVON, July 8 – Avon’s Major Division All-Star team (ages 11-12) continued to roll in the District 6 baseball tournament Sunday. Avon won its fifth straight game with an 11-0 win over Canton in four innings in the opening game of the four-team double elimination portion of the tournament. Avon (5-0) will face Burlington (4-1) on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Sperry Park with the winner earning a spot in the tournament championship game. Canton (3-2) will play at Simsbury National (3-2) Monday at 5:30 p.m. with the loser being eliminated.

Against Canton, Avon scored 11 runs on nine hits in the first inning. Sam Leopold and Connor Harris each had home runs in the inning with Leopold getting a three-RBI blast and Harris sending a two-run homer over the fence. Ryan Ollestad and Eamon Moore each had two-RBI singles in the rally. Adam Theriault had a double.

Canton loaded the bases with one out in the third and fourth innings. But each time, Avon was able to escape the jam. In the third, Harris ended the inning with a pair of strikeouts. In the fourth inning, Leopold came on in relief and got one Canton runner to ground out and ended the game with a strikeout.

Avon is looking for its sixth District 6 championship in the last nine years. In five games, Avon has outscored the opposition by a 57-2 margin. The championship game is set for Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. in Harwinton.
