At a glance: Four teams in tournament action Wednesday

Town officials in Canton said on Tuesday that they hope to have the $3.6 million track and field, multi-use field and parking lot improvements done by next fall. Voters approved the project 3,064 to 2,112 earlier this month. More on this story from our friends at the Canton Patch.

BOYS SOCCER: Canton travels to face Somers Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Class S soccer tournament. Canton is 0-2 this season against the two-time defending Class S champion Spartans.

AVON DOUBLEHEADER: The Avon High soccer teams will host Class L quarterfinal games again at Fisher Meadows on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. The boys face No. 14 Berlin while the girls will tangle with No. 7 Joel Barlow-Redding.

FIELD HOCKEY: The Avon High field hockey team will face No. 1 Wilton (18-0) in the Class M semifinals on Wednesday at Cheshire High at 5 p.m. Avon is now one victory away from a berth in the state championship game on Saturday at Wethersfield High. The Falcons last played for a state title in 1998 when they qualified for the Class S final.
