It’s a great day of sports action for athletes from Avon and Canton High today. There is plenty of tournament action for you to go out and see. Avon’s football, boys soccer, volleyball and girls cross country team are in action today along with the Canton boys soccer team.
FOOTBALL: It’s the biggest game of the season so far for undefeated Avon (8-0) when they host Ellington/Somers (7-0) at 1 p.m. at Avon High. The winner will win the Pequot Uncas Division championship. Can Ellington slow down Avon’s Colin Moore, the leading rusher in the state with over 1,600 yards on the ground this year.
BOYS SOCCER: Canton’s Jimmy Spatcher scored three goals on Friday as the Warriors advanced in the Class S tournament with a 4-1 decision over Parish Hill at Bowdoin Field. Today, the Warriors travel to Falls Village to take on No. 3 Housatonic (11-3-2) in the second round of the tournament.
In Farmington last night at Farmington Sports Arena, Avon prevailed with a hard-fought 1-0 decision over E.O. Smith. Riley Strassner had the goal for the Falcons (13-3-1), who host No. 11 Bethel (10-3-3) today at 2 p.m. at Fisher Meadows in Avon in a second round Class L contest.
GIRLS SOCCER: Avon had a tough time with Bethel but prevailed on Michaela Marcus’ goal with four minutes left in the second OT for a 1-0 victory. Avon (14-1-2) will host No. 15 Bunnell (8-5-4) on Monday at 2 p.m. at Fisher Meadows in a Class L second round contest.
VOLLEYBALL: Avon (14-7) has a challenging assignment in today’s Class L tournament. The Falcons face No. 1 Joel Barlow (18-0) in a second round contest today at 2 p.m. in Redding.
FIELD HOCKEY: Mia Weiler had two goals as Avon (12-3-2) earned a 4-1 decision over Fermi-Enfield Friday at Ethel Walker School in Simsbury. Avon advances to the Class M quarterfinals on Monday against either Brookfield or Hand at a site to be determined.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: Avon, which won the Class MM state championship two weeks ago and was second in the State Open a week ago, competes in the New England championship meet for the first time ever today in Cumberland, Maine. Ridgefield, which easily won the State Open, will be a favorite in the six-state event.
