CIAC ROUNDUP, Nov. 11 — On Monday, three Avon High teams will head to the field in the CIAC tournament. The boys soccer and girls soccer teams will host Class L second round games at Fisher Meadows in Avon, beginning at 2 p.m. At the high school, the Avon field hockey team will host Hand, also beginning at 2 p.m. In Canton, the boys soccer team faces two-time defending Class S champion Somers on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals in Somers.
BOYS SOCCER: The Canton High boys soccer team was two seconds away from the unpredictability of penalty kicks. But James Spatcher snuffed out that by scoring with two seconds left in the second overtime to lift the Warriors into the Class S quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Housatonic Saturday.
Alex Daley scored the first goal for Canton (11-7) with Trevor Lang making five saves in net. Trevor Dakers scored for the Mountaineers (11-4-2) while goalie Willy Yahn made six saves. It is the first time that Canton has earned multiple wins in the Class S tournament since they won the state title in 2003.
No. 14 Canton faces an old rival in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 2 p.m. when they tangle with No. 6 Somers (13-5) on the road. Somers, the two-time defending Class S champions, eliminated the Warriors in the second round a year ago, 3-0. In two games this season, Somers owns 6-2 and 5-1 victories over Canton.
No. 6 Avon (13-3-1) will host its second round Class L game against No. 11 Bethel (10-3-3) on Monday at 2 p.m. at Fisher Meadow in Avon.
GIRLS SOCCER: Defending Class L champion Avon (14-1-2) hosts a second round contest against No. 15 Bunnell-Stratford (8-5-4) at 2 p.m. at Fisher Meadows in Avon.
FIELD HOCKEY: No. 4 Avon (12-2-3) hosts No. 5 Hand-Madison (12-4-1) in a Class M quarterfinal contest at 2 p.m. at Avon High. The winner earns a berth in Wednesday’s semifinal contest. The last time the two teams met in the state tournament was in 2010 when Hand beat Avon, 1-0 in the semifinals.
VOLLEYBALL: Avon’s season came to an end against top-ranked Joel Barlow-Redding in the second round of the Class L tournament, 3-0. The Falcons (14-8) dropped the first game but fought hard in the final two games before losing. Barlow (22-0) prevailed 25-13, 25-23 and 28-26. Senior Jackie Greenburg led Avon with 11 kills, 10 digs and three aces. Freshman middle blocker Abby Laszewski had eight kills on 10 swings along with a block while Ariel Lepito had nine kills and two assists.
