Avon, Canton eliminated from girls basketball tournaments

CP basketball graphicIt wasn’t the ending that they hoped for but the girls basketball season came to an end in Canton and Avon on Monday night in the first round of the CIAC tournaments.

Avon went 18-2 in the regular season and shared the NCCC title with Bolton. But injuries to freshman Abby Laszewski (foot) and junior point guard Anna Schrecengost (knee) robbed the team of two of their better players.

Short-handed Avon (20-4) was no match, offensively, in a 52-26 loss to Bristol Central in the first round of the Class L tournament. The Falcons managed just 13 points in the first half. Michaela Marcus, who had a career-high 27 points in the NCCC Tournament final loss to Ellington last week, led the way for the Falcons with seven points. Madison Mains added five.

Canton (11-12) ended the regular season with six straight wins and went 1-1 in the NCCC Tournament. The Warriors, under second-year coach Michael Jessie, had improved on both sides of the ball.

But against Coventry, the Warriors got off to a slow start, offensively, and couldn’t recover in a 47-40 loss in the first round of the Class S tournament. All-NCCC forward Amanda Curvino had 12 points to lead the Warriors while Alex Martin added eight.

However, scoring three points in the first quarter was a difficult hole for Canton to dig out of. The Patriots limited Canton to just eight points in the third quarter to seize control of the game.
