College roundup: LeDuc posts top steeplechase time in Div. 3

NEW LONDON – Canton’s Michael LeDuc, a junior at Connecticut College, was named the athlete of the week by the New England Small College Athletic Conference in men’s track and field.

Avon’s John Drago and three other teammates set a new Bentley University school record. … UConn unveiled its new Husky logo … Several Canton and Avon athletes competing in college this spring.

LeDuc set a new Connecticut College school record of 8:54.30 in his second place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Sam Howell Distance Invitational, hosted by Princeton. He knocked four seconds off his previous record in the event.

The performance moves LeDuc into the No. 1 spot on the NCAA Division III list in the event this spring.

A botany major, LeDuc earned All-American honors for the second straight year in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III track and field championships last spring with a fourth place finish in 8:59.54.

Drago helps Bentley team set new school record
RALEIGH, N.C. – Avon senior John Drago was part of a record-setting 4×1,500 meter relay team at the Raleigh Relays on April 6. Drago, a senior at Bentley University, ran on the seldom-run event and the Falcons snapped a 12-year-old school record with a time of 16:34.58. Drago ran a time of 4:06.6 in the event, the fastest of the four Bentley runners in the event. Bentley finished 10th in the event, behind nine Division I teams.

Bentley recently competed in the Tufts Snowflake Classic with Canton sophomore Ned Furtney coming in third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:50.82.

UConn unveils its new logo
Husky Logo 2013STORRS, April 11 – The University of Connecticut unveiled its new Husky Dog logo on Thursday. “This logo is everything that a Husky is supposed to be—powerful, aggressive, determined. It is looking right through you and saying ‘Do not mess with me’,” said women’s basketball head coach Geno Auriemma.

UConn’s athletic department has been working with Nike to evaluate all parts of its brand, including word marks, logos and uniforms, for the past 14 months. The new Husky Dog logo will be featured on uniforms for every one of UConn’s 24 athletic programs in 2013-14 and each of those uniforms will also prominently display the block UCONN word mark outlined in red.
